Old Town Twin Heron Tandem Angler Review
Another highly sought after kayak, the Twin Herron is Old Town’s answer for other brand’s top of the line tandem models. I don’t know what it is about tandems, but the kayaking companies go out of their way to make sure that they are a notch above solo’s. The Twin Herron in particular offers several features that give it an edge above solos, but also some unique features such as the Glide Track foot brace system that makes it very comfortable to use.

In addition to being a tandem, it offers all of the necessary rigging to be an excellent fishing kayak as well. The rod holders are Cannon, and there are 6 mount receivers for additional installations of you need more.
Versatility: This kayak tries to be everything at once, and it does a pretty good job of it. If you need the extra space and want to go at it alone, the front seat is removable, allowing extra storage space. It can carry up to 500 pounds of load, and has all of the necessary rod holders and mounts in case you want to add accessories such as a GPS system.
Comfort: The Auto Trim Hull helps to keep the bow down when your paddling, allowing for easier strokes. The seats off great padding as well, with Old Towns patented Comfort Flex Seat system, it adjust to several different angles, allowing you easier range of motion depending on the activity. In addition, a state of the art Glide Track adjustable foot brace system allows you to maneuver your feet into an area which is comfortable for you, to allow for easier paddling all day.
Travel: The Heron is a huge vessel, at 13.6″ in length, it offers a huge cockpit with plenty of space. At the same time, it is light weight for a tandem kayak, coming in at under 60 lbs, carrying handles allow you to easily move the kayak around.
Positives of the Product
Just like all of Old Towns products, they are all about comfort and stability, and the Heron is no exception. You can bring your youngsters along and teach them how to paddle, without fear of tipping.
This is a big boat! It tracks very well and has great maneuverability. The polyethylene hull is very durable, a lot of craftsmanship obviously went into its construction.
Negatives of the Product
This is a big boat! Yeah, its a positive, its also a negative, you’ll have trouble carrying it with a car and despite its light weight, its probably too long to casually store. Also, although you might not lose a paddle race, I doubt you will win any either.
It also lacks a drain plug for the stern. You can purchase this separately, but I think its an obvious necessity. Finally, its not cheap, and the carrying capacity is low! Two big guys might be too much for the Heron to handle.
I really, really like this kayak. If your looking to bring a young family member out on the lake, this is probably the perfect model for you. There is a ton of comfort, stability, and storage space, and it comes pre-rigged for fishing.
Best of all, its very versatile. You can take it anywhere, and do just about anything with it. Whether for touring, fishing, racing, or diving, it will serve its intended purpose admirably. Overall I give it very high marks. If you liked this review and would like to learn more about the best fishing kayaks click here and read our guide on how to find the best one for your needs.
